Wall support beams are heavy steel members, either I-beams or channel beams, installed vertically against the inside face of a foundation wall. Each beam is anchored to the concrete floor at the bottom and secured to the floor joist or sill structure at the top, so the framing of the house carries the load instead of the wall alone. Beams are spaced along the wall according to its length and how far it has moved.

Compared with wall anchors, beams solve a different version of the problem. Anchors reach out into the soil and can gradually pull a wall back toward plumb. Beams hold the wall where it is, immediately and rigidly, without needing any room in the yard. That makes them the better choice when there is no accessible soil outside the wall, when a driveway, patio, or property line is in the way, or when the priority is arresting movement today.

They are also well suited to serious bowing. A wall that has moved significantly is under real load, and a braced steel system installed tight to the wall gives it support along its full height. In some homes we use beams and anchors together, bracing the worst section while anchoring the rest.
